Bridging Horizons: Kochi-Lakshadweep Submarine Fiber Link

A Technological Triumph Enabling Socio-Economic Evolution

In a historic feat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fibre Connection (KLI-SOFC), revolutionizing communication in the archipelago. Spanning 1,868 kilometers and costing Rs 1072 crore, this dedicated submarine cable promises over 100 times faster internet, heralding a new era for Lakshadweep. Funded by the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), the project aligns with ‘Digital India’ and ‘National Broadband Mission,’ propelling socio-economic sectors.

Comprehensive Development Unveiled

Accompanying the KLI-SOFC, projects worth Rs 1150 crore were unveiled, embracing water resources, healthcare, education, and sustainable energy solutions. Prime Minister Modi’s vision underscores Lakshadweep’s integral role in a developed India, marking a transformative leap for the Union Territory. The technological and infrastructural advancements promise a brighter future for Lakshadweep’s residents.

In addition to the KLI-SOFC project, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for various developmental projects, reflecting a holistic approach towards the overall upliftment of Lakshadweep.

1. Low Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) Plant: The Prime Minister dedicated the LTTD plant at Kadmat, capable of producing 1.5 lakh litres of clean drinking water daily. This addresses a critical challenge in the islands, showcasing a commitment to sustainable solutions.

2. Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC): FHTC in all households of Agatti and Minicoy Islands marks a crucial step in enhancing water infrastructure. The availability of potable water not only meets a basic need but also strengthens the tourism capacity of the islands.

3. Solar Power Plant: The inauguration of the first-ever battery-backed solar power project in Kavaratti underscores efforts towards sustainable energy solutions, reducing dependency on traditional power sources.

4. Healthcare and Education Initiatives: Foundation stones were laid for the renovation of the Primary Health Care facility in Kalpeni and the construction of five model Anganwadi Centres. These initiatives highlight a commitment to holistic development, addressing healthcare and education needs.
