Microsoft India’s MS Translator software has expanded its linguistic repertoire by adding Kashmiri, alongside Bhojpuri, Bodo, and Dogri. This move aligns with Microsoft’s goal of supporting all 22 official Indian languages, covering nearly 95% of the country’s population.

Diverse Linguistic Landscape: Kashmiri, spoken in the Vale of Kashmir and surrounding hills, holds a unique vocabulary influenced by Dardic, Sanskrit, Punjabi, and Persian elements. The inclusion of these languages is particularly noteworthy after the Union government’s 2020 Official Languages Bill recognizing Kashmiri.

Wider Accessibility and Impact: The addition of these languages, now totaling 20, enhances Microsoft Translator’s utility for over 61 million people.
