The Union Cabinet has granted approval for a momentous collaboration between the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC). The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), inked in Port Louis on November 01, 2023, marks a significant stride in space cooperation. The agreement focuses on jointly developing a small satellite and leveraging MRIC’s ground station for mutual benefits.
This joint venture, estimated at Rs. 20 crore and funded by the Government of India, is poised to enhance satellite development capabilities. Indian industries are expected to play a crucial role in developing specific subsystems, potentially generating employment opportunities.
The roots of space collaboration between India and Mauritius date back to the late 1980s when ISRO established a ground station in Mauritius, providing crucial tracking and telemetry support for launch vehicle and satellite missions. While the initial agreement was signed in 1986, the current framework for space cooperation is governed by a 2009 agreement, emphasizing the enduring nature of the partnership.
The recently approved MoU solidifies the bond between India and Mauritius in the realm of space exploration. Beyond the development of a joint satellite, this initiative ensures continuous support from Mauritius for ISRO’s ground station, a critical component for India’s satellite missions. The project, slated for completion within 15 months, signifies a collaborative step forward in advancing technological prowess in the region.
