Case Study: In Pangi village near Reckong Peo in Himachal Pradesh, a massive landslide damaged a 200-meter stretch of the old Hindustan-Tibet road (National Highway – 22). This landslide, triggered by intense blasting, resulted in significant damage to the road and nearby villages, leading to the evacuation of Pangi village to prevent potential loss of life.

Mitigation Mechanisms: Scientific advancements have enabled the identification of factors causing landslides and methods to manage them. Mitigation techniques include hazard mapping to avoid building settlements in landslide-prone areas, construction of retention walls to prevent land movement, increasing vegetation cover to stabilize slopes, and implementing surface drainage control to manage landslide movement during rainfall and spring flows.

Understanding Soil and Its Importance

Soil, a complex mixture of minerals, organic matter, water, and air, forms the foundation for terrestrial ecosystems and sustains agricultural productivity. Its formation and properties are influenced by factors such as parent material, climate, topography, vegetation, and time.
